Carolina Miracle League sets Opening Day; Announces partnerships with local colleges

BOILING SPRINGS, S.C. (April 9, 2007) –  The Carolina Miracle League (CML) Board of Directors is pleased to announce “Opening Night” festivities for the league will be held at Miracle Park, located at the North Spartanburg Sports Complex on Old Furnace Road in Boiling Springs, S.C. at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 19, 2007.

The public is invited to attend and share in this special occasion as the CML begins an exciting transition into weekly events.  The festivities on April 19 will begin six straight weeks of play for the Miracle Leaguers.  Opening Night marks the first of three straight Thursday nights of games, before the spring season concludes with three straight Saturday mornings of play.  The league will also use Miracle Park on Tuesday evenings for participants who wish to practice.  The CML is already planning a fall schedule of games beginning in September.

“We hope to have a huge crowd to share in this special occasion with our children,” said CML League Director Pam Dean.  “We have so many people we need to thank publicly for their assistance in making Miracle Park a reality, but the real winners are children with disabilities across our area who finally have a place to play – as often as possible – the game of baseball.”

Additionally, the CML is excited to announce a special partnership with area colleges.  The athletic departments at Wofford College, the University of South Carolina Upstate, Spartanburg Methodist College, Converse College, Limestone College and the Southern Conference have all stepped to the plate to “sponsor” teams during the first season of play.  By virtue of this partnership, the first six teams in the league will be nicknamed the Terriers, Spartans, Pioneers, All Stars, Saints and the SoCon Sluggers.

During the spring season, the Terriers, Spartans, Pioneers and SoCon Sluggers will take the field, with the All Stars and Saints teams added during the fall season as the number of participants continues to grow.

Additionally, Sherman College of Straight Chiropractic has made a sizeable contribution to the Carolina Miracle League support of the league’s efforts to provide organized recreational opportunities for those with disabilities in our region.

The concept behind the partnership is to spawn relationships between Miracle League children and the students, faculty and staff at area colleges.  The Miracle League creates a unique opportunity for athletic teams, student groups and others to assist as buddies or in other volunteer capacities during games.

“Since our first exhibition game in 2003, there has always been a connection between the Miracle League and college athletes,” said CML media relations chairman Lenny Mathis, who serves as the assistant athletic director for marketing and promotions at Wofford.  “There’s not really a way to describe the bond between the kids and the college athletes as a game progresses. You just have to be there.”

Student-athletes from all the local colleges have been invited to join in the Opening Night festivities.  The entire Wofford baseball team and approximately a dozen student-athletes from Converse have already signed up to take part in Opening Night.

ProTraxx playing surface complete at Miracle Park; Registration set for March 24

BOILING SPRINGS, S.C. (March 13, 2007) – Miracle Park took a giant step forward on the road to completion on Monday as workers finished installation of the ProTraxx playing surface.  Located in the North Spartanburg Sports Complex in Boiling Springs, Miracle Park’s synthetic ProTraxx surface will make the field easily accessible for children in wheelchairs and walkers to participate in Miracle League baseball games this spring.

A five-man crew worked daily since March 5th to finish the project. Attached with this release are photos of the completed playing surface taken by Nick Palatiello.  The dugout areas are accented with a blue turf.  Miracle Park is not quite complete as fencing, bleachers, entrance signage and other accents are awaiting installation.

The new Carolina Miracle League (CML) Board of Directors was announced at a meeting Monday evening.  Pam Dean will serve as the League Director for the first season of play.  Other board members include: Sandra Gosnell (secretary), Danny Holcombe (treasurer), Lenny Mathis (public/media relations), Mandy Willis (sponsorship), Paula White (registration), Amanda Ingram (special projects), Tony Revels (facility/equipment/uniforms), Shay Berry (team mom coordinator) and Eric Eberius (buddy coordinator).

The Board of Directors will work side-by-side with the original Steering Committee for the CML who will continue to oversee further construction at the site including the last phase of the project - a restroom and concession facility.

The Board of Directors also announced that participant registration for the 2007 season will be held at Miracle Park on Saturday, March 24 from 10:00 a.m. to Noon.  The public is encouraged to join the Miracle League to view the new field and learn more about how to become involved as a participate or league volunteer.  Also, on March 24th, the nicknames of the first Carolina Miracle League teams will be announced and light refreshments will be served.  The registration will be held in conjunction with the North Spartanburg Youth Association’s “Opening Day Jamboree.”

Outfield completed at Miracle Park; Vandals attempt to burn roll of turf

BOILING SPRINGS, S.C. (March 9, 2007) – Despite the work of vandals who attempted to set fire to a roll of ProTraxx surface overnight, workers continued steady progress in the installation of the playing surface at Miracle Park.  Located in the North Spartanburg Sports Complex in Boiling Springs, Miracle Park is being outfitted with a synthetic ProTraxx surface that will make the field easily accessible for children in wheelchairs and walkers to participate in Miracle League baseball games this spring.

In the photos attached with this release, the Carolina Miracle League chronicles not only the progress of today’s work, but the work of the vandals who failed in their attempt to burn a roll of the turf.  The roll, which was sitting on a pallet in the parking lot waiting to be used later in the installation process, was knocked over and part of the outside plastic wrap melted.  The ProTraxx surface itself was unharmed as there are fire retardant compounds in the material.  Approximately twenty other rolls of turf were knocked off the pallets and rolled to various points around the parking lot.

Monday, March 5th marked the beginning of the project and the installation process should be complete by early next week.  The installation may be delayed over the weekend with a chance of showers in the area.

The Carolina Miracle League (CML) has another release scheduled for Monday.  As has been the case all week, today’s photos were taken by Nick Palatiello.

Infield takes shape after day two of turf installation at Miracle Park

BOILING SPRINGS, S.C. (March 7, 2007) – A team of five workers neared completion of the infield at Miracle Park on Wednesday afternoon. Miracle Park, located in the North Spartanburg Sports Complex in Boiling Springs, is being outfitted with a synthetic ProTraxx surface that will make the field easily accessible for children in wheelchairs and walkers to participate in Miracle League baseball games beginning this spring.

This is actually the crew’s third day on-site as they unloaded over 100 rolls of ProTraxx turf and 75 drums of glue on Monday. The installation is expected to take seven to 10 days with the crew working from sunrise to sunset each day. The installation could be delayed later in the week as there is a chance of showers in the area.  Tomorrow, the outfield will be applied to the asphalt, a process that could take two full days.

The Carolina Miracle League (CML) will release photos to chronicle the progress of the installation daily.  With this release are two photos, taken by Nick Palatiello, of today’s progress.

ProTraxx surface to be installed at Miracle Park beginning tomorrow

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Carolina Miracle League (CML) Steering Committee is pleased to announce that workers are preparing to apply the ProTraxx playing field to the asphalt subsurface at Miracle Park located in the North Spartanburg Sports Complex in Boiling Springs.  Workers arrived today, Monday, March 5th to unload 100 rolls of turf, and over 75 drums of glue and other building materials that are required in the process to apply the playing surface to the asphault.

Application was delayed by one week as the current work crew finished another Miracle League project in Jacksonville, Florida. With pleasant weather expected through the week, the entire process should be complete early next week as the five man crew begins work.

“When you have been working on a project for over six years, waiting an extra week is easy,” said CML Chairman Danny Holcombe.   “We are fortunate to have a good weather week upcoming, so backing up the installation an extra week is really a non-factor.”

Fencing around the playing field and the supports for the entrance archway leading to the field are in place.  A 70-space handicap-accessible parking lot was completed in May 2006 adjacent to the site of Miracle Park.

The CML is in the midst of re-developing the Board of Directors as the goals of the Carolina Miracle League evolve.  While fundraising will always be a major task for the organization, now the CML is assembling members of the community to serve in many different capacities within organization including team coaches, coordinators for “team buddies” and several other important roles.  Those interested in serving should contact Pam Dean via e-mail at bodean@quixnet.net or call 579-1805.

MIRACLE LEAGUE BALLPARK CONSTRUCTION UPDATE
ProTraxx surface to be applied as early as February 26

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Carolina Miracle League Steering Committee will be hoping for mild weather beginning Monday, February 26 as workers prepare to apply the ProTraxx playing field to the asphault subsurface at the North Spartanburg Sports Complex field in Boiling Springs.

The committee will hope for a week of dry weather with high temperatures in the mid-50s or warmer, the correct parameters for the ProTraxx surface to be applied.   The entire process will take five men approximately five days to roll out 100 rolls of turf and apply over 75 drums of glue to the asphault.

“To say we will be watching the weather next week would be an understatement,” said CML Chairman Danny Holcombe.  The long range forecast is for highs in the 60s through the week, but with a chance of rain toward the end of the week.

Fencing around the playing field and the supports for the entrance archway leading to the field are in place.  A 70-space handicap-accessible parking lot was completed in May 2006 adjacent to the site of the CML ballpark.

MIRACLE LEAGUE BALLPARK CONSTRUCTION UNDERWAY
“Bowling for a Ballpark” event raises over $11,000

Spartanburg, S.C. – The Carolina Miracle League Steering Committee is pleased to announce that construction on the area’s baseball diamond for children with disabilities is underway.  The announcement comes on the heels of a tremendously successful “Bowling for a Ballpark” event held this past Saturday.

The bowling event, held at Shamrock Lanes on Blackstock Road in Spartanburg, raised over $11,000 toward the ballpark’s construction.  Below is a list of twenty lane sponsors who contributed to make the bowling free for those in attendance.  Many bowlers however made additional contributions to the Miracle League in lieu of lane fees.  In all, over 830 games were bowled during the six-hour event.

The event served a dual purpose as Rion Holcombe, son of CML Chairman Danny Holcombe, created the idea for a bowling party/fundraiser for his birthday.

“Not many 13-year olds have hosted a birthday party that raised $11,000 for charity,” said the elder Holcombe.  “With all the contributions that have come in over the last few months and everyone who contributed to this event, we have been blessed.  Now, we are ready to take the next step in this process.”

The next steps in the construction of the ballpark are well underway as grading has been completed and the asphault subsurface for the field has been laid.  Fencing and other improvements around the field will be added in the next few weeks.

“Our efforts thus far have us to a point where the field will become a reality, however we will continue our fundraising efforts so we can add handicapped-accessible bathrooms and a concession stand adjacent to the field,” noted Holcombe.  If “opening day” were tomorrow, the players and families would need to use portable bathroom facilities.  A 70-space handicap-accessible parking lot was completed in May 2006 adjacent to the site of the CML ballpark.

MIRACLE LEAGUE PLANS “BOWLING FOR A BALLPARK” EVENT
CHICK-FIL-A FUNDRAISER ALSO SCHEDULED FOR NOV. 27

Spartanburg, S.C. – On the heels of the successful “Miracle Thursdays” fundraising events at area Sonic locations the Carolina Miracle League Steering Committee has planned two more special fundraising events.  The CML learned in October of a deadline that challenges the organization to raise approximately $100,000 before the end of this calendar year, or risk losing $150,000 in grant money.

The first fundraising event is Monday, November 27 at the Chick-Fil-A at Hillcrest (East Main St., Spartanburg).  Simply stop by the restaurant between 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. and a portion of sales will be donated to the Carolina Miracle League Development Fund.

The second event is an afternoon of bowling on Saturday, December 9.  Area bowlers are invited to Shamrock Lanes on Blackstock Road in Spartanburg (behind Spartanburg Martial Arts) between Noon and 6:00 p.m. to help raise money for the Miracle League.

To take part in “Bowling for a Ballpark,” bowlers are asked to pre-register 4-5 person teams for 4 specific time periods (Noon, 1:30 p.m., 3:00 p.m., & 4:30 p.m.)  There are no lane fees associated with the event, although donations will be accepted from participants.   Simply call 595-0943 to pre-register your team.

The event serves a dual purpose, as December 9 marks the 13th birthday of Miracle League ballplayer Rion Holcombe, son of CML Steering Committee Chair, Danny Holcombe.  “This was actually not our idea, it was Rion’s,” said the elder Holcombe.  “He is pretty aware of the fundraising project and thought of the idea to have his birthday help the effort.”

Already, over 20 local individuals and businesses have pledged to sponsor a lane.  Now, the CML is targeting individuals, college students, church groups and others to come take part in the festivities.  Teams are asked to register by calling 595-0943 before November 27 so the CML may give preliminary information to Shamrock Lanes.  The final deadline to register is the following Monday, December 4.

The Carolina Miracle League diamond will serve children with disabilities not only in Spartanburg County, but children from Union and Cherokee Counties in South Carolina and Rutherford and Polk Counties in North Carolina.

MIRACLE LEAGUE PARTNERS WITH SONIC, CHICK-FIL-A TO HELP FUNDRAISING EFFORT

Spartanburg, S.C. - The Carolina Miracle League is pleased to announce a partnership with two local restaurants to help in the fundraising effort to build a baseball diamond for children with disabilities in our area.  As was noted last week, the CML Steering Committee recently learned of a deadline that challenges the CML to raise approximately $100,000 before the end of this calendar year, or risk losing $150,000 in grant money.

Beginning Thursday, October 26, the public can help with the effort simply by dining during selected hours at three local Sonic Drive-In restaurants.  During the specified times a percentage of every sale will go toward the Carolina Miracle League development fund.

Below is the schedule of “Miracle Thursdays” at the three Sonic Drive-In locations in Spartanburg County:

Thursday, October 26, 5:00 – 8:00 pm -- Highway 290 at Reidville Road, Duncan

Thursday, November 2, 5:00 – 8:00 pm -- Highway 9, Boiling Springs

Thursday, November 9, 5:00 – 8:00 pm -- East Main Street, Spartanburg

Additionally, the Chick-Fil-A at Hillcrest will also host a fundraiser night from 5:00 – 8:00 pm on Monday, November 27.

“We have been blessed to have the assistance of so many businesses and individuals in our community over the last few years. Last year, we received such a generous donation from Ronald McDonald House Charities and now we are excited to partner with Sonic and Chick-Fil-A over the next month,” said CML committee chairman Danny Holcombe.

“We hope this is just the beginning of events that can not only help with our fundraising effort, but also be a great way to spread the word in the community that this ballpark will be available for children with disabilities in our area.  We would like to thank Johnny Burkhead (Sonic) and Matt Thompson (Chick-Fil-A) for their support,” noted Holcombe.

The Carolina Miracle League diamond will serve children with disabilities not only in Spartanburg County, but children from Union and Cherokee Counties in South Carolina and Rutherford and Polk Counties in North Carolina.

CAROLINA MIRACLE LEAGUE TO PLAY MAULDIN MIRACLE LEAGUE OCTOBER 14

CML with end of year deadline to reach fundraising goal

Spartanburg, S.C. - The Carolina Miracle League will participate in a special exhibition game on Saturday, October 14 at Sunset Park in Mauldin against players from the Mauldin Miracle League.  There will be two games beginning at 11:00 a.m.

“This is a really special opportunity for our children.  Not only will our players have the opportunity to interact with the Mauldin children, but they will have the chance to play on a surface designed for Miracle League games,” said Danny Holcombe, CML Steering Committee chairman.  “We are really grateful to Dennis Raines (Mauldin Miracle League Director/Founder) and everyone with the Mauldin Miracle League for the invitation to play.”

To prepare for the exhibition game, Carolina Miracle Leaguers Jonathan Dean and Logan Hopper took to the field at the North Spartanburg Sports Complex in Boiling Springs last week to get in a short practice session.

The Mauldin Miracle League field opened in April 2005 and is used every Saturday during the summer and fall for Miracle League events and wheelchair softball games.  To view photos of the Mauldin Miracle League field, log onto www.mauldinmiracleleague.com.

For more information about the Miracle League exhibition event on October 14, contact CML Steering Committee member Pam Dean at 579-1805.

CML FACES END OF YEAR DEADLINE TO REACH FUNDRAISING GOAL

In recent weeks, the CML Steering Committee has learned of a deadline that is the most important since the project began in 2001.  The CML is challenged with raising approximately $100,000 before the end of the calendar year, or risk losing $150,000 in grant money.

“This is really the most important few months in our history.  If we reach our goal by year’s end, the field will become a reality and we will be playing Miracle League games on the North Spartanburg Sports Complex site by the spring of 2007.  We are very optimistic that we can reach this goal, but clearly we have a lot of work to do and we need the help of the community,” noted Danny Holcombe.

The Carolina Miracle League diamond will serve children with disabilities not only in Spartanburg County, but children from Union and Cherokee Counties in South Carolina and Rutherford and Polk Counties in North Carolina.  As an example, the Mauldin Miracle League facility currently draws from an area reaching as far as northeast Georgia.

MIRACLE LEAGUE NIGHT WITH THE STINGERS TUESDAY

Spartanburg, SC - The Carolina Miracle League will hold the second special "Field of Dreams" event this summer in conjunction with Spartanburg Stingers, a member of the Coastal Plain League on Tuesday, August 1. The event will take place at Historic Duncan Park as the Stingers host Asheboro.

Miracle League players will take the field with a member of the Stingers as the starting lineups are announced and during the national anthem. All Miracle League players will be admitted for free and the general public may purchase general admission tickets for only $2.00. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. There is not a Miracle League exhibition game being played in conjunction with this event.

Members of the CML Board will be on-hand distributing information with shirts, magnets, and personalized brick order forms and for fans to purchase to assist in raising money for the project.

The Miracle League Board reminds the public that the fundraising effort continues to complete the project. There are needs around the ballpark that still must be addressed including the restroom/concession facility and adjoining courtyard. To help with the fundraising effort, etched bricks are still on-sale. These bricks will become part of the walkway and entrance to the completed ballpark. To obtain an order form for a brick, call (864) 585-5271.

MIRACLE LEAGUE ANNOUNCES SITE FOR BALLPARK

Spartanburg, SC - The Carolina Miracle League held the first exhibition event of the year last night at the Spartanburg County Parks and Recreation Department's North Spartanburg Sports Complex on Old Furnace Road in Boiling Springs. The game was played on a coaches pitch field that will be converted into the Miracle League field over the summer.

In doing so, the current grass and clay surface will be repaced with a synthetic Mondo surface - the same surface used in other Miracle League fields around the country. Already, 71 handicapped parking spaces have been added to the complex adjacent to the future Miracle League ballpark location. The architect on the project, Bob Pitts, has created a rendering of what the site will look like as the field is finalized and the concessions and restroom areas are completed.

"This is another great example of how a public/private partnership can work to provide opportunities that would otherwise not be possible. We are extremely excited to offer this site as a ballfield for ALL children to enjoy and look forward to a long relationship with the Carolina Miracle League," said Jeff Caton, Director of Spartanburg County Parks and Recreation.

"Last night was just a tremendous event for the kids and their families. It has been a long road in securing the site, but thanks to the County and many others we have finally found a site we think will be wonderful. It is very exciting for all of us to begin planning for an opening day in the fall," said CML Board Chairman Danny Holcombe.
